Though we didn’t have class, there was a movie from 2018 called “Can you ever forgive me?” I actually enjoyed the movie because a lot of the main actors I knew from other popular movies. It was nice to learn the importance of selling real and fake letters. It gave me a better understanding of how letters are important no matter how old they are. The only thing that matters about the letters is the story behind the words and format for other people to appreciate words in freedom.
The setting was in New York, 1990s, and it was focused on the author Lee Israel who’s struggling to pay her bills. She meets with a man named Jack, and they become friends immediately in a bar. Throughout the movie, Lee stole letters from a library and sold them in secret from Jack. She tells Jack later on, and they end up working together which also helps Jack have a roof over his head when living with Lee. Lee and Jack separate after Jack destroys her home and loses respect for the loss of her cat which was the only gift she cared about.
Overall, the movie itself was very interesting that I would watch it again. I enjoyed the storyline of Lee Israel, and I wished that her character had more emotion. I think that it was an experience to learn how much letters meant to her though she forged them. What I do find hilarious was the ending. She sent a letter by the name of Dorothy Parker to a shop that had a fake letter on display, and her new letter replaced the “fake” letter though nothing changes with the fake letters being on display.
Silly, isn’t it?
