Week 11: Cover Letters

In class, we discovered the true meaning of what’s important with sending cover letters for the future. Like being yourself, one page, and expressing the true meaning of what you want. Learning the main purpose of cover letters helps in the future with careers/jobs because of how managers take under 10 seconds to look through them. It’s interesting to think that cover letters can be different depending on the person’s personality. It’s all in a matter of what’s being expressed throughout the letter for what the person has to offer. We read two letters that were complete opposites as prime examples of what you should and shouldn’t do for your cover letters.

Robert Pirosh’s letter “I like words” was interesting because he said that he liked letters from the alphabet with an explanation in strange verbs. What surprised me was how he was dedicated to letters rather than himself until later on his in letter. With the beginning being only about letters and the end how he quit his job for the position he’s writing to has made an impact throughout the cover letter. I think that the letter was more goofy and made for someone to laugh somehow, but it was definitely a letter that shouldn’t be used as a cover letter.

Eudora Welty’s letter “How I would like to work for you” was impressive because of how dedicated she was throughout the letter. She was straight forward with expressing her age, home state, and general background information with education. She was consistent throughout the letter which was what is expected for a cover letter. Her attitude throughout the letter was out of this world because she was more professional than unprofessional. I think that her letter was important as a female myself because of how I focus on my future like she did throughout her letter for the position that sadly was declined.

Through both of those letters, I have learned it’s best to be yourself but maintain professionalism. It’s important to be professional because it’s what people expect from you 100% of the time. It’s best to say that cover letters being seen in different formats helps understand what’s right or wrong with writing. It helps balance the idea that letters have grown throughout centuries, and it’s still being relevant today.
